Empower Yourself for Yourself, Not Others

"I need to be confident, I cannot let Lizzo down.” Now, at first, that seemed like a very valid thing to be thinking. Lizzo, a singer Paper Magazine dubbed as “Body Positive Queen of 2018”, has not only been taking the music industry by storm, but has continuously stood up for crucial causes in our current society and environment. Calling her a body positivity advocate, in my opinion, honestly doesn't do the singer justice. She has been vocal about so much more, including gender and sexuality, mental health and media representation.

No One Really Cares If You Don't Go To The Party

Much earlier than most people my age, I stopped enjoying drinking, going out and socialising into the wee hours. It wasn’t ideal when this transition from keen clubbing enthusiast to stay-at-home grandma happened when I was predominately based away at university. I was surrounded by a mass body of epic drinkers so the change in myself was, well, weird and to feel weird in such an insecure time of my life anyway, wasn’t overly nice.

An Open Letter To Travel Influencers (And Their Working Class Followers)

Most of these celebrities and influencers probably wouldn't travel as much as they do if it they weren’t paid or provided with subsidised accommodation. They’re travelling for BUSINESS, they’re getting paid thousands to travel. Some of us don’t have that same privilege. I urge you (the travel influencers) to stop telling people to “just save up and travel” or “you could travel if maybe you prioritised X, Y, Z”. If only you knew how privileged that sounds, you would stop. Maybe you have the privilege to travel but lower income individuals do not have that same luxury.

Three Things I’ve Learnt From My Younger Sister

I spent the first five years of my life begging my parents for a little sister and was over the moon when I finally got one in 2002. Anyone who has ever had a baby sister will know what I mean when I say they get away with anything, they are always the ‘cute’ one and steal pretty much everything you own. You try your best to offer advice and guidance, but they are so stubborn that most of this falls on deaf ears.

The Grades I Got When I Was Mentally Ill are Not a Reflection of My Intelligence

* Trigger Warning: This article contains discussions on severe mental health issues and suicide *

Throughout my whole life I’ve been the smart kid. From elementary to junior high I was always at the top of my class; in high school, all of my classes were either Honours or AP (advanced placement). However, this thing called depression and anxiety came into my life and since then it has taken its toll.

Women Are Not Baby Making Machines

The amount of times I've been dismissed because I mention that for me, children are not a necessity in life, is ridiculous. Sorry not sorry, but if I die in 10 years and I don't have a successful career I would be disappointed to say the least. If I don't have children in 10 years, I'll be fine. I never grew up thinking about having children or marriage, but I always knew what career I wanted to pursue. Some of us don't want children and that's OK.

Why We Have Got Victoria Beckham All Wrong

But last week, in a revelation that precisely nobody cares about, I realised that I had got Victoria all wrong. Or not that I had got her wrong, but that I had been too keen to digest the Victoria Beckham narrative fed to us by the media. After listening to an intimate interview with the ex pop sensation I was more than surprised to hear her joking and laughing and generally sounding like a bloody lovely person.

Inspiring Women: Rachael Bland

You may have seen in the news a few weeks ago about the tragic passing of Radio 5 Live broadcaster Rachael Bland. Her story, although it had the most dreadful ending, is one of sincerity and courage. An inspiration to women everywhere, Rachael used her last years on earth to make such a positive impact on the world, which is why my piece is dedicated to her today.

Porn Culture on Love Island

When it was revealed that Megan had undergone a number of surgical procedures to achieve her current look internet trolls were eager to attack. A Google search of Megan’s name will even provide ‘before pictures’ as the first suggestion. But what those who shared these ‘before and after’ images perhaps didn’t realise is that by doing so they simply fuelled the idea that Megan was only attractive after having had her surgery and closer fitting our narrow definition of beauty inspired by porn.

Trump Supporters: We Can't Be Friends

People seem to think those who lose friends or choose friends based on their political standing are ridiculous. I agree.  Just because I’m a democrat, doesn’t mean I’m not going to speak to a republican, it’s just silly. The problem arises when we’re dealing with a white supremacist that spews hatred, racism, bigotry, and the list goes on. It is no longer about “political opinions”, it’s about being a decent human being.

Why Anna Delvey is Just One of Us Living in the Age of the Scammer

For those who have not yet heard the tale of Anna Delvey (where have you been?) for several years she lived the life of a New York It Girl, operating under the guise of heiress to an anonymous German fortune. Never without a hundred-dollar bill or a Snapchat filter, Delvey rubbed shoulders with celebrities and frequented exclusive members-only clubs as much as you and I visit the local Wetherspoons.

Coping With The Harsh Reality of Being a Fresh Graduate

Come September 2017, however, small town girl, twiddling her thumbs at her parent’s home, I was clueless for what was to come. Graduating with a 1st class degree, I ticked off every box my parents ever presented to me, academically speaking. But (for some unfathomable reason) I was unemployed, desperate and starting to really panic that I was never going to get a job.

What I Have Learned From Growing Up in an All-Female Household

Relationships, especially of the romantic kind, have never been my strong suit. Now that might be because I’ve never tried being in one. Some people call me a cynic of love, some say I’m in denial, while others try to convince me to “just fall in love” because I need a man in my life. The truth is, everything I needed I got from the women around me.

You are Not Your Disability, You Just Have a Disability

I have the best relationship with my uncle. He is the most caring genuine man you could ever hope to meet. He can cheer you up in an instant, he is always on the other side of the phone when you need a chat, he loves spending time with the family and he never forgets anyone’s birthday and always comes through with a cracking card and present. Oh, and he also has Down’s syndrome.
