We're Cancelling Women in Competition

It makes us feel inferior and we fight those feelings by downplaying others; whether it be their successes or looks.

In this day and age, everyone seems to be living to be better than each other instead of focusing on themselves. Since I identify as a woman, I can only speak on the observations I’ve made amongst other women. I’ve observed unnecessary competition amongst women when in reality a lot of the competition is created in our heads (I’m guilty of this too). There’s a lot of pressure, especially with Insta models constantly in our explore pages, which make us feel like we need to be prettier, funnier, tanner, and more well-travelled. It’s an extremely toxic mentality.

It makes us feel inferior and we fight those feelings by downplaying others; whether it be their successes or looks. It’s a never-ending cycle because it doesn’t actually make us feel better, sometimes it may even make us feel worse. It’s important to examine our own toxic behaviours and stop them before they become a destructive cycle. Next time you feel inferior to others just remind yourself that what you see is not the whole picture and it’s just in your head.

Never make assumptions because the funniest girl on Instagram stories could be the loneliest, the pretty girl you stalk for style inspo might be depressed and your favourite travel blogger might have no home to go back to. It may sound cliché, but I think people need a constant reminder because we seem to always forget. No one is doing “better” than others, we’re all in different chapters and that’s ok! Let’s not forget that we all have different goals in life, so of course we won’t all be doing the same. Constructed societal pressures to be the best of the best is unnecessary pressure and the only people that don’t believe that are the ones who are too wrapped up in the Instagram game to realise they’re affected.

All you need to worry about is how to better yourself, if someone is going to the country you’ve always wanted to go to, or if someone got a job and you’re still seeking, just try to be happy for them! Their success does not mean you’re a failure. They’re probably going through the same issues and worries as you are so please be kind.  We’re leaving this unnecessary competition amongst women in 2018, we already go through too much to be putting up with this.
