Why I Will Never Turn Back From a Bob

"There came a time when I was about 18 that I realised that long hair just didn’t suit me in the same way, so I cut it all off. It was probably the best style decision I have ever made."

Created in Paris in 1909 and still entrancing the world now, the bob has proved ever-fashionable and ever versatile as a haircut. Shocking audiences to begin with, (an androgynous look for women was fashionable for the first time), and yet developing into one of the most modern, popular and diverse hairstyles ever. Now, in 2018, models and Instagram stars find endless ways to make such a classic yet modern style look effortlessly cool, stylish and always unique. Cara Delevingne, Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, and even Justin Bieber are all examples of celebrities who have styled the bob look to perfection now and in the past.

Having had a bob when I was little (cut by my dad), probably for more practical purposes than stylish, I always wanted really long curly hair that I could plait or tie up in a princess-like bun. I absolutely hated my short hair, I felt like a boy most of the time, so much so that I actually used to ask my dad if he could ‘cut it long for me’ (yes, seriously). Yet there came a time when I was about 18 that I realised that long hair just didn’t suit me in the same way, so I cut it all off. It was probably the best style decision I have ever made. I haven’t once looked back and quite possibly never will. Why should I when my hair is beyond easy in terms of upkeep and when the messy bedhead look is actually desired? All I need do is wake up and walk out the door. Cutting my hair off actually allowed me to feel myself, my confidence developed and I felt sophisticated and a kind of stylish that I just hadn’t felt before.

This probably all sounds a little over dramatic about one simple chop, but looking back now the change was miraculous and I couldn’t recommend it enough. Best of all I’ve had about four different versions of the same haircut, and though it grows quickly, you are never at risk of it looking too long and, if you cut it the right way, it will never look shapeless. Long bobs are just as stylish as the shorter ones.

Though it may take several attempts, and it will probably change throughout your life, when you get the perfect haircut you just know. It’s like finding your soulmate, only in hair form. The compliments come rushing in, you feel more attractive because it suits your face more, and a good haircut adds that extra touch to any outfit you put together. Trust me, you’ll know it when you’ve found it.

Hair is an excellent form of self expression, a confidence booster and every inch is a part of you and your personal style. If you have wondered about going for the big chop in the past but were a little too scared, constantly thinking ‘what if it doesn’t suit me?’, I urge you to give it a go. If it doesn’t work out it will grow out and at least you can say that you gave it a try!
